Obituary For Carolyn Carson Bowers Hyde Newman

Carolyn Carson Bowers Hyde Newman, 81 of Asheville passed away on September 5, 2021 at Aston Park Health Care Center. She was the daughter of the late Roy M. Carson and Emma V. Carson both of the Deep Creek community of Bryson City, NC. She was also preceded in death by three loving husbands, Daniel Thurman Bowers, Jr. (D.T.) July 25, 1961, Paul James Hyde, March 8, 1986, and Gary Duane Newman, January 11, 2011.

A graduate of Swain County High in 1958, she worked at the Wamsutta Mill Store in Swannanoa, NC. Carolyn loved music and was the pianist for several small churches. Her beautiful alto voice brought pleasure to all who heard her sing either as a soloist or as a member of the gospel quartets she sang with in the 1970s and 80s. Throughout her life she and her sisters provided our family with many hours of humor and play. Always a playful spirit, Carolyn loved to draw and play cards. Often the winner, she had the knack of keeping those around her engaged and entertained. In her younger years she spent hours preserving the food our family ate. Nothing has ever tasted as good. Likely, it was the love that only she could add. Carolyn loved her family. She was a devoted and loving wife having been widowed three times. As a mother she loved her daughters unconditionally even through pain and sorrow. She always knew when something was off-kilter and called to offer her gentle words of encouragement or well wishes. She made us laugh, a lot. Carolyn was a grandmother thrice over. These girls fondly call her “Crazy Grammy” as they had such fun in all of their misadventures, as someone would inevitably suffer a minor boo-boo. Carolyn was a sister. The Carson sisters, as they are known to close family, are endeared to her survivors because they have shown us how to laugh and live in the best and worst of times. Life was challenging for Carolyn the last several years as advanced vascular dementia stole her ability to talk and her ability to take care of herself. Her three daughters alternated taking care of her in either their homes or with her in her home of 55 years. These were not easy times but the essence of who she was remained until her final days. Her humor, though very fleeting, would occasionally find its way out of her mouth or at the very least be shown through her funny, well-known gestures. Carolyn died a peaceful death; taking days to process her life before transitioning to her new one. Radiantly beautiful, she continued to show her family how to die with dignity and in her own manner letting us know that she was ready to leave this world. Missed so very much, those closest to her know that they were given a blessed gift to have been able to share her life.

Surviving to cherish her memory are three daughters, Terri Bowers Hoffman of Asheville, Pamela Suarez and husband Kim of Sulphur, LA and Paula Hyde Ray of Fairview; step-children, Eric Newman and wife Beth of Olive Branch, MS, Michelle VanHorn and husband Brian of Sarasota, FL and Jenny Newman of Lakewood Ranch, FL; grandchildren, Emma Claire Hoffman of Asheville, Jami Ray Johnson and husband Kyle of Apex, NC and Christen Danielle Ray of Fairview; step-grandchildren, Kristi Thibodeaux and husband Scott of Bell City, LA and Derrick Suarez and wife Theresa of Sulphur, LA; step-great-grandchildren, Connor and Adrienne Thibodeaux, Eleanor and Liliana Suarez; three sisters, Anne Smiley of Bryson City, NC, Patricia Fuller of Lenoir City, TN and Nancy Carson of Asheville, NC.

Carolyn comes from a large extended family and has a host of friends who she never failed to remember and love though age, her illness and distance in her latter years kept them apart.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30am on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Swain Memorial Cemetery with Terri Bowers and Joe Hoffman officiating. If you wish to send flowers, Crisp Funeral Home, 669 US-19, Bryson City, NC 28713 is assisting the family with graveside services.

Carolyn lived a color-filled life and surrounded herself with vibrant colors and textures. If you wish, on the day of her celebration wear your favorite color in her memory. Our intent is to celebrate her life even in our mourning. After the graveside service all are invited to join the family for a celebration of Carolyn’s life under the Pavilion at Deep Creek Park. Please bring a potluck dish to share and a chair or blanket on which to sit. We request that all respectfully embrace that we are meeting during a Covid pandemic and take precautions as necessary to prevent the spread of this disease. Mask-wearing is strongly encouraged as well as frequent sanitization of hands. If you plan to attend either of these events, please RSVP to bowerstlb@gmail.com.

Memorials may be made to: Meals on Wheels, Mountain Care Adult Day Care, Buncombe County Site, and Four Seasons Hospice.

Lastly, we would like to send our appreciation to the staff of Aston Park, particularly those who worked on the 500 Hall, for the dignity and love they showed our mother during the last days of her life. Thank you for putting on her lipstick and keeping her beautiful, soft curls clean and smelling so good.
