Obituary For Dean Lee Shumway
Dean Lee Shumway was born in Bend, Ore., Dec. 28, 1933. He spent half his 87 years in Oregon and the other half here on the East Coast in Virginia and North Carolina. He passed away at his home in Brevard July 12, 2021. His parents, brother, first wife and daughter, Kerry (Tim), predeceased him.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Laura; his in-laws, Alice and Mark Gibson, and the dogs, Pup, Princess and Jack at the home. He is also survived by his sister, Carol (Bob); two daughters, Lisa and Nicki; son, Scott; eight grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He served his country in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, taught fisheries and wildlife at Oregon State University, and worked for the federal government with the Federal Regulatory Energy Commission’s Division of Hydropower Licensing.
He was an avid gardener, fisherman and hunter. His greatest love and accomplishments came through volleyball, where, as a player and coach, he won many national championships and MVP awards. However, his greatest joy came from sharing his love of the sport with others.
A casual memorial service will be held Saturday, July 17, on Calico Lake at 11 a.m. The address is 180 Calico Lake Dr., Brevard. In case of rain, we will move to the house.
