Obituary For Marvin J. Gray, Sr.

Marvin J. Gray Sr., of Asheville, transitioned to his heavenly home on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. A native of Spartanburg, SC, Marvin was born June 19, 1948 to the late Robert Lee and Vera Miller Gray. He was a graduate of the Asheville City School System.

He then served in the US Army. Marvin was a former member of Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church and New Vision Baptist Church, where he served as a devoted usher for many years. He was a current member of Victory Fellowship Worship Center where he served as a greeter. He also served as an usher for the Citywide Ushers Union.

Marvin was employed for several years with W.H. Arthur Roofing Co., Stroupe Sheet Metal and Carolina Mountain Roofing. He loved to dance and talk noise to everyone. To all who knew him, he was known as “Lawnmower” and was well-known for his eccentric style of fashion.

In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by his wife of more than 40 years, Mary Frances Caldwell Gray and his brothers Michael and Earl Gray.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife and best friend, Mae H. Gray; his sons Johnny Hampton (Lisa) and Marvin J. Gray, Jr. (Tasha) of Asheville; his daughters Pearly Hampton of Asheville, Nicole and Tracy Scott of Detroit, Michigan; his siblings Beatrice Hudson (Harmon), Annette G. McClure, and Valerie Sloan of Asheville; Tonya Sloan Parker of Texas; and his brother Walter Gray (Joann) of Forest City; a loving Aunt Fannie Mae Williams of Spartanburg, SC; his step-children Mary Hensley, Jose Hayden, and Octavia Morgan all of Asheville; and a host of grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held on Saturday, July 17 at 2:00pm at Victory Fellowship Worship Center, 450 Aiken Road, Asheville, NC 28804 with Pastor Sonia officiating. Visitation will begin 30 minutes prior to the start of the services.
