Obituary For Robert Edward Bagwell

Robert (Bob) E. Bagwell, 88 years old from Fletcher, passed peacefully in his sleep at his North Carolina home appropriately on Veterans Day, November 11, 2021.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Ann (Elingburg) Bagwell from Skyland, Son Daryl Scott Bagwell (Linda); Daughter, Pamela Jane Jamison (Bob); three, grandchildren, Justin Bagwell, Megan Jamison, Ashley Jamison Moore(Matt); and three great-grandchildren, Blaze, Maddox and Emma Grace.

Bob was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. on August 12, 1955 in the United States Air Force after graduating from ROTC and acquiring a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina, Columbia Campus. During the first two years of active duty, Bob went to and graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in Meteorology. As an officer in the U.S. Air Force, Bob traveled the world in service to his country. In 1970, while stationed in Bitburg Germany, Bob was the Detachment 1 commander of the 31st Weather Squadron assigned to the 36th tactical Fighter Wing, At the rank of Major, his detachment won the highly coveted “Williams Award” for excellence in military Weather Forecasting. On July 31, 1976, and just a few days shy of 21 years of active duty, Bob retired and was honorably discharged from MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida having attained the rank of Lt. Colonel. Upon returning to civilian life back in the mountains of Western North Carolina, Bob worked and managed Bagwell Lumber Company until 1991. He also acquired his North Carolina Realtor’s License.

Bob lived his life with a loving passion for family and friends. With his magnetic smile, Bob never met a stranger. He enjoyed playing tennis, chess and was an avid golfer with 7 holes in ones to his credit. Heaven just got a great soul and Bob will be missed by all that had the opportunity to know him.

A special and most sincere heartfelt thank you to all the devoted and loving caregivers that gave Bob such quality end of life care. Our Dad is looking down from the heavens with his biggest smile ever, A smile of thanks.

A Memorial celebrating Bob’s life will be determined at a later date.

    Sorry to hear about Bob's passing. I worked for Bob at Bitburg AB Germany and replaced him as the commander of the weather station that supported the 36TFW. He was a fine officer and treated everyone fairly. My sincerest condolences to his wonderful wife and children. The world has lost a very fine man. Kenn Kullberg (Lt Col USAF, Retired)

    Uncle Bobby will truly be missed. I have fond memories of family reunions and visiting Aunt Mary and Bobby in Florida. He was such a gentle soul with a beautiful smile and laugh. Our thoughts are with the family. Stan, Brenda, Scott and Brett Schreiber.
