Ilse Stwertnik died peacefully on Thursday, August 14, 2019 in her home after a long fight with congestive heart failure. She was 90.
Ilse was born on October 20, 1928 in Berlin, Germany. She fled East Germany in 1947 to Berlin where she met her husband, Charles B. Stwertnik during the Berlin Airlift. They married in 1949 in Berlin. Ilse and her husband traveled throughout the U.S. during his long military and government careers. Retiring in 1982 in Chicago, IL, she and Chuck spent a year traveling extensively in Europe before moving to Asheville in 1984. Although she grew up in Germany, she felt that the United States was her true home. She resided at Trinity View in Arden, NC for several years.
Ilse was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as Omi to her three grandchildren. She had a vivacious personality and always made people around her laugh. She made friends everywhere she went. Cooking and baking were her passion as the many friends and family who enjoyed her meals and baked goods can attest.
Ilse was preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years, Charley, and parents Hans and Rosa Dossow, sister Ingrid Wanshurra, brother Ingo Dossow all of Germany.
Survivors include daughter Mary Ann Dore of Hickory, NC and son Frank and wife Nancy Stewert of Mesa AZ ; her three grandchildren: Cassandra Anderson (Andrew) of Fairbanks, AK, Tiffany Stwertnik and Michael Stwertnik of Mesa, AZ; sister Ilona Sirreyeh of Gronau, Germany, and brother-in-law Kenneth Stwertnik (Jan), many nieces and nephews and a host of lifetime friends throughout the world.
A Life Celebration Ceremony will be held on Thursday, August 22nd at 10:30 A.M. at Trinity View Retirement Community, 2533 Hendersonville Rd, Arden, NC. Private interment will be at the WNC State Veterans Cemetery.
Ilse will be remembered for her beautiful soul, generous spirit and welcoming smile. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
